Storm chasing (also referred to as tornado chasing tours, tornado safaris or storm safaris) with organized tours is a rapidly growing tourism industry where experienced storm chasers guide adventurers and tourists to amazing severe weather. The hunt for tornadoes, super cells, hail, lightning etc goes all over the midwestern states of USA. The tours are usually between 5-10 days in order to maximize your chances of seeing Mother Nature in her worst mood.

Storm Chasing usually takes place in the spring, around May-June, but you can go chasing in April and July as well. The tour could take you from the Rocky Mountains in the West to the East coast and from the Mexican border in the South up to the Canadian border in the North. The nature of weather makes it impossible to know where you will be any given day.

StormChasingUSA.com will help you towards an experience of a lifetime, that will become truly addicting. StormChasingUSA.com is not a Tour company, we just provide the information about the tour companies and their tours.

Who’s running StormChasingUSA?

christoffer My name is Christoffer Björkwall and storm chasing is my greatest passion in life. I am a Swedish storm chaser specialized in storm chasing tours.

Since 2009 I have chased with 10 different tour companies and thus have a knowledge about the storm chasing tour companies like no other in the world.

I have been featured in USA Today, national Swedish media such as Sveriges Radio P3 “Morgonpasset”, Expressen, Kvällsposten, Café Magazine and Nyheter24.se.

I live in Skanör in the southernmost tip of Sweden with my fiancée and two kids. We get very few thunderstorms here but I try to chase for water spouts in the summer.

Day 9: Chasing 5 states in one day

The moisture had returned to our target area but we were waiting for a weak trough to eject into our target area to enhance 500mb winds etc and strengthen any storm that would exist in our target area – but it really hadn’t passed over the mountains yet, so no help from there. Thus, when…

Day 8: Lightning storm at sunset in New Mexico

We slept in Raton, NM, which was pretty much our target area for the day to come as well. We knew the storms would fire off the mountains and take their sweet time to get to out on the front range where the severe storm potential was better – and they sure did. We chased…

  • Day 6-7: Pikes Peak

    Day 6-7: Pikes Peak

Day 6 never became a chase day so I spent all day at the hotel catching up on work. Our Day 7 (Wednesday) target was initially SW Texas but the forecast indicated that there would be no storms so we decided to head up Pikes Peak, outside of Colorado Springs to do some more mountain…

Day 4-5: Down days around Denver

We knew our Day 3 was a lucky day and also the last day of severe storms (we could reach) for several days. On Day 4 we had to go to Denver to leave Alex’ rental car as well as fix our own so we left Burlington for Denver and went straight up towards Rocky…

  • Day 3: Amazing storm structure and four tornadoes

Day 3: Amazing storm structure and four tornadoes

Day 3 was our best hope for a good chase day before a crashing cold front would remove all the moisture from the Plains and cause a couple of down days. The setup was much better than Day 2 with great moisture (60+), good helicity, great instability (2.000-3.000 CAPE in some places) but there were…

  • Day 1 & 2: Surprisingly good storm in Colorado

Day 1 & 2: Surprisingly good storm in Colorado

After a really active weather pattern we were getting into a new pattern with much more iffy setups. As of the start we used Day 1 to drive from Tulsa to Colby, KS, to get in position for what could be a marginal day on Day 2 (June 7th) and a better day on Day…

What camera equipment I bring on a storm chase

Storm chasing often comes with some sort of photography interest in one way or another. Many want to document, print, or share there sightings as still photography or video. This is equally true for me. Storm chasing really kicked my photography interest off with a bang! My first two chases I had my Canon 450…

Review of the novel “The stormchasers” by Jenna Blum

I just finished reading “The stormchasers” by Jenna Blum, a book I purchased together with “What stands in a storm” by Kim Cross earlier this spring. Where “What stands in a storm” was a documentary about the April 27th 2011 tornadoes in Alabama “The stormchasers” is pure fiction. It is a story about Karen, a…

Review of “What stands in a storm” by Kim Cross

I listened sporadically to an old episode of “Tornado Talk” last month while cleaning my son’s room to help soothe the anticipation for the upcoming storm season (only 2 months left for me now!). In the episode they talked with Kim Cross about her book “What stands in a storm”. I didn’t pay that much attention to it but…
