General review

Easy to get over excited as a newbie to chasing storms and justifiably so! What an excellent experience. Peter Wharton, leading StromGroup Chasers was a commensurate professional. He not only gave thorough briefings setting the scene of storm formation and what it means to 'chase' but kept the info coming throughout the various chases too. As a new comer I couldn't have asked for more. For those more experienced it strikes me you would be in very good company. The downtime was also highly enjoyable with a lot of laughs and the odd midnight gathering to enjoy some spectacular lightening shows. I can't recommend Peter nightly enough and this won't be my last chase with Peter

Tour guide review

Peter was professional, knew his subject intimately and was an excellent communicator. He had all the right gear to ensure we knew where the weather was and seemed to have a sixth sense about which storm to chase. He made everyone feel comfortable, part of a team and catered for all levels of experience

Vehicle review

Chevy Suburban LT. Ideal for the trip but does require all parties to not only get in to the spirit of chasing but follow the guidelines on packing! Up to 11 hours a day in vehicle was more than comfortable helped by reasonably frequent stops. No complaints

General review

I was fortunate to have been subbed into Tour Five this year at late notice, and I couldn't have hoped for a better experience for my first storm chasing tour! Peter was the consummate storm chasing tour guide, full of both knowledge and wisdom, quick to dispense both. He has a keen eye for developing storms and a passionate interest in the field. During inevitable down times during our weeklong tour (ie, several mornings), he has a considerate concern for his guests' interest levels and planned entertaining diversions for us, whilst always maintaining an eye on the forecast timing to ensure we were still "positioned" properly when it came time for active chasing. Peter also possesses a scholarly wit, and can regale his tour group with both weather facts on-the-move as well as personal tales of adventure that border on Indiana Jones-ish. Accommodations were secured every night at motels that were safe and clean, thanks to advance planning we never stayed anywhere inadequate. Our food choices were a mix of interesting local finds (fantastic Creole food in Montana... who knew?) and grab-and-go when there was a need to, well, grab and go! The vehicle was one self-contained SUV (previously a Suburban, but our tour used an upgraded Escalade). Because Peter's tours are limited to 6 people -- including himself and his co-driver -- it remains a compact, flexible, intimate, fast-moving group dynamic. With all due respect to the large caravan-style tours on the market, I much prefer this self-contained tour method. The other major difference of course is that Peter does not run this operation as a for-profit tour company. It's more like "splitting the costs" of storm chasing, which means that he's doing this to pursue a passion instead of dollars. In addition to Peter's knack for storm-finding and tour planning, I found Rich to be a courteous and competent co-driver, also knowledgeable and well-equipped to help gauge the skies. Brad, Jody and Lena were delightful companions making for a congenial backseat experience, even over a 4,000-mile road trip week. Thanks to all involved for a great experience! Already looking forward to next year! --Mike D.

Tour guide review

Besides the positive comments above, Peter was also very thorough in helping me make last-minute arrangements to join the group, indulging my numerous email inquiries and working through quick logistical arrangements with me. Also, he provided a professional-grade briefing at the onset of the tour week which benefitted me and one other first-timer.

Vehicle review

The Escalade was as comfortable as could be for the many road miles traveled, certainly more so than a big tour group shuttle van and reportedly better than the similar Suburban that it replaced. There were plenty of power ports for charging purposes, as well as ample room for fridge and luggage in the rear.

My boyfriend (can you still say that if you're over fifty?) is very into storm chasing, and he invited me to join him this year, for a week. I enjoyed it very much, saw lots of beautiful scenery, impressive skies, spectacular lightning shows, hail the size of golf balls, and even a tornado! The tour was organized very well, I felt very safe during the tour, thanks to two great drivers and the comfortable car that was used. Peter Wharton knows his stuff, he continuously lead us to the right places. I will certainly recommend StormGroup Chasers to people who are interested to experience a storm chase.

Tour guide review

The tour was well organized, good equipment, like laptop, satellite receiver. Even a small fridge in the back to keep food for lunch in the field. Comfortable motels with good service. Experienced tour guide, very well informed and friendly.

Vehicle review

The car that was used, a Chevrolet Suburban SUV, was very comfortable, even on long drives. There was enough room in it for us, a party of six.

What an awesome experience! I saw seven funnel clouds and four tornados, as well as several supercell thunderstorms and fantastic lightning shows. Our team enjoyed several days of intense storm action complemented with beautiful views. Highlighted by our half-day chase of the Canadian, TX, tornado; we had great success in identifying and tracking storms. We had an outstanding group; the group was so fun and warm that it became a major plus of the tour - I would have had a great time if we had never seen a storm - and we saw storms! Bottom line - the tour was well-organized, well-led, and super fun; I heartily recommend StormGroup Chasers.

Tour guide review

Peter Wharton is an outstanding guide. He knows the science of storm chasing as well as people. This is a passion for Peter and it shows. Peter educates and is very generous in passing on his knowledge. He also focuses on the total experience; from compatibility of the crew, to places to eat and things to see - he makes sure all have fun. Peter has great intuition to go along with the science - if there was action - we were there, and sometimes ahead of it.

Vehicle review

We made our trip in a Chevrolet Suburban. With six in the vehicle, it was perfect for storm chasing. It was quite comfortable with excellent visibility from all positions. The middle row enjoyed better visibility and was somewhat more comfort than the back. We swapped seats every day to assure everyone got time in the better (again - all seats were good) seats.

All I can say is WOW!!! What an awesome experience and Team with both the great expertise of Peter (owner and lead plus one of the best in the industry) and the skilled assistant/driver Brad. It was one of the most exciting experiences in my life what great storms and pics to show all. In fact, I will be back in 2016 for some more Storm Chasing with Peter and Storm Chasers Group 🙂 PS when there are no storms to chase, Peter and the Team take you to some wonderful and beautiful places in this great USA. Also, special thanks to my fellow Chasers..Trudy, Rick and Jackie for showing me the ropes as it was my first time chasing and also traveled solo!

Tour guide review

Both comfortable and professional (plenty of room as they only have one van with 4 guests and Peter and the Drives.

Peter is the best and was in ALL THE RIGHT PLACES FOR THE Storms. I saw both a tornado and awesome storms including the "Space Ship" looking storms (very rare they tell me)!

My experience with Storm Group Chasers was nothing short of awesome. The thoughtfulness and expertise shown by Peter and his crew during our week together was so very impressive. We saw amazing weather (of course!) and had such a relaxed and entertaining time together as a group. I cannot wait to get out there and do it all over again!

Tour guide review

Peter showed incredible expertise and chose his paths very wisely during our week together. He makes sure that we are all safe first and foremost, but is never afraid to head after the weather when it beckons to get the best views and the best light for photography.

Vehicle review

We were in a Chevy Suburban. While I like it more than the usual van configuration, the very back seat is not comfortable and has no windows that open. We were fair about trading off days in the "kids' seat" in the back, but a bigger vehicle would have been better for six adults and their gear.

General review

This was my first year chasing and I am hooked. Despite being late in the season, every afternoon delivered another jaw-dropping encounter with a gigantic, beautiful, swirling storm. I saw the most intense lightning display I've ever seen, and was introduced to many types of weather I'd never imagined. Our leader, Peter Wharton, gets full credit for getting us into the right places at the right times. He demonstrated a great mixture of knowledge, planning, instinct and caution that kept us excited, but never scared. I am a landscape photographer, and came away from the trip with images that have inspired more positive reaction than almost any other work I've made. I've already signed up for next year.

Tour guide review

In response to the photographers on board, Peter successfully led us to the best vantage points and light rather than into the more extreme parts of the storms. Peter's top priority was storm chasing, but we always managed to find comfortable and reasonably priced places to eat and sleep (given the available options). He was also very good about making time for interesting local sights along the way, and knows all the good breakfast joints.

Vehicle review

We travelled with six people in a Suburban, so there was plenty of room for gear and personal items. I'm sure having a smaller vehicle allowed much more flexibility in planning, and the ability to satisfy personal requests. That said, Peter was happy to drive an extra hour or two to get to the best storms, so there were days I would have liked a nice rock-band tour bus with beds and a kitchen.

The 2 main reasons why we think this group suits us is there is only 6 people at once. The other reason is the friendly and knowledgable Tour Leader, Peter Wharton. He always manages wherever possible to get us in the right place at the right time, but without taking undue risks. We have already booked for next year which will be my 8th and my wife's 7th. I thoroughly recommend this for anyone interested in severe storms!

Tour guide review

Peter is very friendly and approachable and has a vast knowledge and a sixth sense for the weather, probably due to instinct and experience.

Vehicle review

The vehicle was a comfortable SUV with a fridge also for picnics. It is relatively comfortable if you travel light, but you need to be prepared for long trips. We have a great group of folk we tour with,so the burden of long journey's is eased. My main tip,is make sure you travel with someone who will not bore the pants of you after 50 miles!

I'd just like to say that I've always had a great experience when chasing with StormGroup Chasers. Peter is an experienced storm spotter and leader getting us on great storms while keeping safety a priority. Having a love for photography, most photo opportunities are accommodated as long as it doesn't interfere with the timing of the chase. For anyone who is interested in the technical aspects of targeting sever weather, Peter is eager to share his knowledge. SGC tours are unique in that it is a small group. We are able to get to know one another, unlike some tour companies who have larger groups of people. By the end of the week you will have made lifelong friends as well as have a camera full of great memories.

StormGroup Chasers 2014 Tour was a fantastic experience. From start to finish, the tour was a fun, engaging experience. During my tour with SGC, we were on all storms of any significance. SGC would always position well for any potential storm outbreak and take the necessary actions to get us there in time, safety and without incident. You feel with SGC that if there was a storm to be seen, we’d be there.

Tour guide review

Peter Wharton of SGC runs a professional, engaging and fun tour. You always feel that you're in good hands. From initial booking to tour end and follow up, you feel that you were part of a professional, experienced tour group. Peter takes the time to make sure even the little day to day details of tours are covered and you feel in the know at all times. Additionally, the daily FB update provides you a great reminder of your tour.

General review

Day 1 one of this Tour provided a textbook example of super cell development from it's genesis to anvil formation at 52,000'. Three tornadoes were observed that afternoon, including the Carney Wedge. No effort was spared to provide the Tour with the best opportunities for severe weather observation. On the occasional "blue sky" day spent positioning for the next weather event, opportunities were taken see some of the natural and historic features of the Great Plains. Overall, a very experienced and professional operation based on comprehensive understanding and analysis of severe weather and its origins.

Tour guide review

Tour Guide Peter Wharton openly shared his views on the day's data analysis and his strategy for making the most of the opportunities. This made the experience both informative and satisfying. In addition, Peter was ever mindful of the group's comfort - even including a morning run to Starbuck's.

General review

Without a doubt, this was the best adventure vacation I’ve ever had! It was both an educational and exciting experience! Importantly, safety is always at the heart of any decision made and because of the tour leader's understanding of storm dynamics (and perhaps some good old fashioned intuition) Peter always placed us at the “right place, at the right time”. What better way to see places in the US that you may not otherwise visit?! The photographic opportunities were boundless and the laughs and the friendships made with like-minded persons will last a lifetime. The smaller, nimble group approach allows you learn and see much while greatly simplifying travel logistics. If you’ve ever given any thought to storm chasing, StormGroup Chasers is most definitely the way to go!

A truly unique and awesome experience where you can meet people that share the same passion about severe weather. Lots of opportunity for amazing photography. I really appreciate the small group approach, no crazy lineups at restaurants or pit stops. Peter has all the tools and an uncanny ability to consistently predict and pinpoint the best storms. His track record for finding the tornado warned cells is the best. Peter runs these tours on a not-for-profit basis. Since his tours are driven by his passion for severe weather you're guaranteed to get the best experience possible. And at a cost well below the competition. We are returning in 2014.

Tour guide review

His small group approach gives everyone a window seat and an opportunity to communicate, be involved, learn and ask questions. In multi vehicle groups your driver may not know that much about severe weather. With the one vehicle everyone knows what's going on as it happens. If there was bad weather anywhere, Peter will find it. If by chance there is no bad weather at all, then Peter would take us to see some natural or historical landmarks while positioning us for the next day.

What a thrill following the storms ! Learning about the weather, taking lots of photos, sightseeing all in the company of likeminded travelers was an unique experience. The enthusiasm of Peter, our co-driver Brad and my fellow passengers was incredibly contagious ! A magical holiday indeed ! Peter is most knowledgeable about the weather and shares his expertise willingly. He has a knack for finding the best weather but never puts the thrill of the chase before safety and common sense. I am signed up for 2015 and am so looking forward to another trip.....

I've been storm chasing with Storm Group Chasers for the past 4 years. 2014 will be my 5th year. I enjoy the chase, but also the level of service provided by the tour group. This group, since it is so small, can be accommodating; however, within the limits of safety. This group will risk not seeing an event in order to keep us safe. Something I think is extremely important! The small group makes it not only an experience with weather - but great camaraderie. I would highly recommend anyone interested in weather and chasing to become part of this group!

Tour guide review

Chasing with Peter Wharton is a pleasure. He is extremely knowledgeable about weather and is willing to teach those who want to learn. Although finding a tornado is a bonus, he has the knack for finding weather events.

Since this is a small group, the van is comfortable. Great music provided by Peter. What is also nice is the attempt to eat healthy during the tour. Although fast food may be necessary depending on the weather; picnics in the park are an added attraction.

Chased with SGC for the 3rd year in a row and I want to express my gratitude to Peter again a great week of chasing. Very well organized and lots of fun! Peter must have a 6th sense for severe weather because wherever there was a good storm with tornado potential we were already at the best spot. Also a big thank you to my friend Glenn for co-driving us safely. And to the rest of the group- Rick, Jeff and Ed, it was great getting to know you and I am happy to have 3 new friends-for-life. We took all opportunities to get us to severe weather, and with enough time to enjoy other entertainment. We really did have a holiday feeling.

My husband and I started chasing in 2010, and have been with StormGroup Chasers since its inception. With Peter's keen understanding of storm formation and interpretation of weather data, we have been fortunate to chase some of the most notable storms in recent years, including Joplin and El Reno. The camaraderie with the people we have met over the years is what makes each chase week unique, and we are fortunate to have made friends from all over the world.

Tour guide review

Peter is always keen to involve the group in discussions about why a certain target is chosen. He takes the time to explain the dynamics that will influence storm formation and enjoys sharing his expertise. Of course, safety is the first priority and while we always strive to be in the best position to witness tornadic activity, making sure we do not wind up in harm's way remains paramount.

Vehicle review

Two drivers and four guests chase in a large SUV - everyone has a window seat, and the vehicle is always comfortable. Additionally, Peter has outfitted the vehicle with a small bar fridge, so we are able to keep snacks and lunches with us for daily picnics - a nice alternative from fast food. There are also plenty of outlets available to recharge phones and other devices.

Peter Wharton is very knowledgeable, resourceful and uses all the his experience to find any potential weather if its to be found. Over the years I've been chasing with Peter, its actually rare we ave a down day. What's important as well, Peter takes the time to talk with the group to discuss and explain the W's of chasing - Where - Why - When - What. This helps to provide everyone an experience of participation vs passenger.

This year was our third year with Pete and again we enjoyed ourselves immensely. When there were storms we chased and saw some awesome sights, but even when there wasn't we still managed to have a great time due to the company of Pete and Brad! Bottom line is that if there are storms Pete is the man to get you into the right place at the right time. If there aren't any storms then you will have good food and good company too!! Overall by far the best of 3 different tour operators I have used.

Tour guide review

Pete is ultra organised and you are fully aware of what to expect on the tour. He is also very informative and is keen to share his thoughts and expertise. Some other tours I have been on have just loaded you into a back of a van with little or no information. This is definitely not the case with StormGroup.

StormGroup Chasers is the best way to go for exploring the wonders of super cells on the plains! In addition to chasing the right storms, the whole experience is fun... from the picnic lunches we enjoy (better than "fast food") to the friendships and laughter... It is my favorite vacation! The "single vehicle" (SUV) concept employed here is the best... you'll never be crammed into a passenger van like other tours, with scores of others for what can be a very long day. With but four clients per tour, everyone enjoys a window seat, outlets to charge devices and room to enjoy whatever adventure lies ahead. I have been present for 11 tornadoes in the past two years and look forward to the coming year!

Excellent... Even on sunny days, we visit points of interest that add to the experience!

One SUV... Everyone has a window seat. Portable refrigerator is in-vehicle, so fresh snacks and lunches can be purchased in the morning and consumed at our leisure... A healthier option to fast-food.

I'll shortly be going on my 5th storm chasing trip having been on my first in 2006. I went with StormGroup Chasers in 2012 as they were offering a different experience to the other tour operators I'd been with before (I think I've "outgrown" them)and will be coming back for more with them this year. I also saved in the region of $1000 on the trip which is a bonus. So what's different? You get a great storm chasing experience but combined with a well thought out and engaging road trip. Bearing in mind the 3000 or so miles travelled in a week there's so much more to the Plains than just storms (don't worry you will see some) and cliched tourist stops: great scenery, photo opportunities, quality food stops and picnics, meeting the interesting and friendly folk of the Mid-West - in short some authentic Americana. SGC also has a lot of returners so there's usually a lot of experienced travellers to share stories and photos with. You also have the advantage of being on an agile tour with only 6 of you which makes for easier chasing. On this tour you're not just a "passenger".

Tour guide review

I've known Peter since 2008 and this year's driver Glenn since 2006. They are very experienced and Peter will get you safely to view storms. Last time I saw super cells with amazing structures and rotating wall clouds, gustnadoes, hail fog, stunning lighting, mammatus clouds, and breathtaking sunsets

I have never experienced anything like it in my life. I have the best memories from this tour. Peter and Malcolm were knowledgeable, had the best equipment and a massive truck to shuttle us around in. Their enthusiasm was passed on to all that were on this tour. We all had a great time together. The weather was amazing...I've never seen anything like it in all my life. Tornados, hail as big as golf balls and thunder and lightning just like in the horror films. Amazing.

This was the most exciting holidays I've been on...by far. There were tornados in the area and there were storms, the like I'd never seen before. Peter had excellent technology at his finger-tips to track storms and he and his co-driver, Malcolm were on top the game throughout. With their expensive radar equipment and their extensive knowledge of geography and meteorology it made our holiday so exciting because it seemed very easy to find storms. Travelling hundreds of miles a day was most enjoyable too. The scenery was breathtaking and the vehicle was very comfortable for all of us. It really is a never to be forgotten experience and I would recommend this holiday to anybody that is thinking about going on one of Peter's tours.

Peter was fantastic. He had a wealth of knowledge for tracking and finding storms. He did this with health and safety being paramount and did not put us into any danger. This did not hinder our experience one bit I might add. He clearly is very experienced in this type of tour as he found places to eat and sleep every day/night too.

This tour has a much more personal and intimate atmosphere due to its restricted size. Everyone in the vehicle is not only kept in the loop as to the groups situation and objectives, but actually has the opportunity to learn the dynamics behind the decisions to make storm intercepts. Another nice touch to the tours is the daily picnic lunch. This was a really nice break from the normal fast food restaurants and a huge time saver as well. Anyone who has been on a tour before, knows that as you are driving to an intercept area, you must manage your time well because sometimes you can miss a tornado by sheer minutes. It is much easier to time manage a smaller group when it comes to eating and rest room breaks when you are making your way to your target area. When it comes to breakfast and dinner, Peter tries to find a restaurant that is a local favorite instead of the usual national chain restaurant fare. We had some really awesome home style cooked meals on the tours this last year! Anyone who even considers going out on a storm chasing tour will discover that you instantly have commonality with everyone else on the tour and the common thread is your fascination with weather. Peter’s approach to a smaller group concept is much more personable and educational and the experiences you share with the group will establish lifelong friendships.

Tour guide review

I must say that I am pleasantly pleased with the new style of organization Peter worked up for the tour group which offers a more personal experience for everyone, not often found in larger tour groups. Peter not only shares his knowledge of weather, but keeps everyone informed as to our objectives and our current weather situation. This enables everyone to better understand the dynamics behind tornadic storm development and thus acquire a deeper appreciation for the weather events that are witnessed. Peter put us on the best storms every day and we saw a number of tornadoes on the two tours I was on. Peter also puts an emphasis on safety by positioning the group in the safest viewing positions in relation to the tornado's speed and direction of movement.

Vehicle review

The vehicle is an SUV with plenty of room which is important since you spend so much time in the vehicle. The seats are soft and much more comfortable than a van bench seat. The vehicle is new and had no maintenance issues and it has plenty of power just in case you need it.
